We are not working with Thee, but with him, that is our mystery. It's long -eight centuries- since we have been on his side and not on Thine» (ib., p. 35).

The best study of the evolution of Galdós's attitude to the clergy (the dividing line is Angel Guerra) is in Francisco Ruiz Ramón, Tres personajes galdosianos: Ensayo de aproximación a un mundo religioso y moral (Madrid 1964), 127-222.

The fullest treatment of this subject is an unpublished thesis for the degree of M.A. in the University of London: The Influence of Tolstoy on Galdós (1962) by Vera Colin. My thanks are due to Mrs. Colin for her kindness in lending me her thesis, to which I am indebted in this and the following paragraph. An earlier study is the relevant chapter in G. Portnoff, La literatura rusa en España (New York, 1932). The same author's «The New Idealism in the Works of Tolstoy and Galdós», RR, XXIII (1932), 33-7, is superficial and not relevant to Nazarín.

Quoted in Robert Ricard, Galdós et ses romans (Paris, 1961), 28n. The quotation is taken from a book: which I have not been able to see: Nicolás María López, La cofradía del Avellano, Cartas íntimas de Ganivet (Granada 1935 or 1936).

Javier Herrero, Ángel Ganivet: un iluminado (Madrid 1966), 273-4; the quotation is from Idearium español. Cf. (ibid., 272).
