Should the position of this study find any acceptance, some other general judgments of Galdós' work would perforce need to be re-examined. I should suppose that Eoff's view that «from El amigo Manso (1882) on, plot movement and moral improvement generally coincide on an ascending line» (The Novels of Pérez Galdós, p. 139) -one of the most fundamental tenets of his study- would at least require further qualification of the term «moral improvement». (In any case, Eoff misreads the action of several of the novels -e.g., Manso and La de Bringas- in the service of his thesis).
