Blanca de los Ríos suggested that the censor was Fray Alonso Remón, who was a Mercedarian like Tirso, and also a dramatist. The manuscript was sent for his perusal, and his approving signature is not on any of the remaining folios. However, the censor's hand is very different from Remón's signature on other plays and from that in other manuscripts thought to be in his hand. Much more work remains to be done to straighten out the tangle of different hands on this manuscript.

Gerardo Kurtz did the photography. He experimented with reflected infrared light, infrared luminescence, reflected ultraviolet light, and crossed or induced polarization. Photographs made with polarized light proved to be the most helpful. After experimentation with the usefulness of computer techniques in further separating the two ink tones, we will publish our results in greater detail for other researchers who might face the same problem.

It does not pretend to be comprehensive. Omitted, for example, are valuable articles on individual actors and actresses such as those by Hannah Bergman on Juan Rana, and editions of individual plays which contain information on autores and companies, such as Charles Ganelin's recent edition of Claramonte's, La infelice Dorotea, which contains numerous company lists for Claramonte companies.
