This is the simplest explanation for what happened on folio 245 of the genuine 1664 edition of Calderón's Tercera parte. See M. R. Greer, «Calderón, Copyists, and the Problem of Endings», BCom, 36 (1984), 72-3.

See W. F. Hunter and D. W. Cruickshank, «Notes on the Text of Calderón's "Psiquis y Cupido para Toledo"», Iberoromania, 4 (1970), 282-4; for other examples of cancels, see Moll, «Problemas bibliográficos», 70-2. Sometimes when the printers had to produce a suelta which required several whole sheets and a quarter sheet, they would set the quarter sheet twice and print it in the manner described for the quarter sheet cancel: see D. W. Cruickshank, «The First Edition of El burlador de Sevilla», HR, 49 (1981), 463; sueltas, bound by «stabbing», could cope with a single leaf. As a last resort, the printers could make corrections by hand. Only if these occur in several copies will it be safe to assume that they are the printers'. Even then, they will not always be authoritative.
