References to La vida es sueño are to Sloman's edition (see note 60); La cisma de Ingalaterra is quoted from the edition of F. Ruiz Ramón (Madrid, 1981).

For example, C. A. Jones suggested in his edition of El médico de su honra (Oxford, 1961) that the reading «viendo» in line 1369 ought to be «huyendo» and that the error arose because Calderón's spelling was «vyendo». This seemed only a guess, but the explanation is supported by the fact that Calderón used this spelling for «huyendo» in the autograph manuscript of Polifemo y Circe.

Of course series such as Castalia expect editors to follow certain norms in the introduction and typographical style; but they are free, for example, to use modern or old-style accidentals for texts of plays.

Only the Hamburg Calderoniana series, under the direction of Prof. Flasche, has tried to retain all accidentals when working from printed copy-texts.

Yciar, Arte subtilissima, L3r + v. It is instructive to compare the accidentals (especially punctuation) of this revised version with that of 1548. In this case we have reason to suppose that Yciar himself made the revisions. The «estos» error results from the fact that in the first version the masculine «interuallos» was used instead of «detenciones». This careless, incomplete revision is the same as Calderón's failure to change «en ella» to correspond with «Palacio». Both errors help to show which version is the earlier (although Yciar's error might be confused with a misprint if we did not already know which version was the earlier).

For example, the words «hay» and «¡ay!» were usually both written «ay»; the scanty punctuation of the seventeenth century does not always distinguish them. Even if he retains «ay», however, the old-spelling editor will need to remind his reader in cases where ambiguity is possible.
