Blanco-Aguinaga, «On 'The Birth of Fortunata'», Anales galdosianos 3 (1968): 13-24. The author's intention in this article is to rebut some of the opinions expressed by Gilman in his previous study. I am obviously in agreement with Blanco-Aguinaga on the importance of the social background to the full appreciation of Fortunata y Jacinta.

Frequently the narrator describes for us the streets through which the characters pass on their way from one place to another, but Villalonga does, too, in his storytelling. Such is the case when he tells Juanito how he followed Fortunata (p. 158). Shortly before Fortunata actually does meet Juanito while out running errands, she dreams of meeting him on a certain street (pp. 425-26). In reminiscing of his childhood, Moreno Isla recalls the exact street locations (p. 470).
